KickStart Ghana has been working with Mama Viak’s Children’s Home and Preparatory School since the summer of 2009. In that time we have provided many volunteers to run educational summer clubs for local children and provided grants for projects at the school.
Mama Viak established the school and children’s home so that deprived children could receive a proper education and help prepare them for later life. She is a passionate believer in education and helping young Ghanaians.
Since the volunteers have been coming, my English has improved a lot. English is my favourite subject now.

Our volunteers volunteered at Mama Viak’s each summer from 2009 until 2012 and built a strong rapport with the school. Volunteers worked at the school each day during the summer holidays, bringing well prepared educational and fun activities for the children. These can include maths and English lessons or more artistic activities such as face painting, together with games and singing. The emphasis is on fun and building confidence amongst the children.
The mattresses provided by KickStart Ghana mean the children are no longer susceptible to pneumonia.
Our grants have helped pay for monthly food supplies for the institution and in 2010 we provided funds for new mattresses. Previously the children were sleeping on mats on the floor, leaving them susceptible to illness. In the summer of 2011 we paid for the installation of a water storage tank, as the lack of a reliable, clean water supply had been a real problem. New tables, chairs and benches have also helped to make the school an environment more conducive for learning. We have been delighted with the positive impact these contributions have made, and the feedback received from Mama Viak has been fantastic.
